What’s this issue got in store?

This issue is a wake-up call for tolerance. We want to remind the cycling community of the value of discussion. All of the articles in this issue should prompt you to think. There’s no right or wrong, we simply want to celebrate and encourage open-minded dialogue with you and the rest of the cycling world.

Take our Gravel Group Test in which we pitch all-road bikes with 700 x 32C tires against the category’s most progressive concepts with mountain bike genes. From a traditionalists point of view, we’ve surely left what is “proper” and “acceptable” a long way behind us. From the 14 most exciting models for 2020, we have found the bike with which you will enjoy a maximum of riding fun in every situation!

We asked and you answered. As many as 6,464 velophile individuals took over 20 minutes of their time to answer our questions. In our article on the results of the readers’ survey we illustrate your opinions and interests and show what is important for you in the future. Winner Heinz B. has already received his Focus bike and is happily riding it already. Our second winner – Lars A. – will receive his BMC in the next few days.

“You’ve had a baby, your priorities will change!” They definitely did for our UK editor Cat. Sitting on the turbo trainer is a distant memory for her and there are a lot less spontaneous meals out than there used to be. But one new priority that has emerged is to teach her son never to question whether a woman should or could do anything she wants to do. In her article she impressively answers a central question: Should racing mums be confined to the sidelines?

In our conversation with the physiotherapist, bike fitter and broom wagon driver Bastian Marks, we find the truth about bike fitting: What is important to be aware of and what are stubborn myths? What constitutes a modern frame geometry and how did the Besenwagen Podcast come about? In this article, many question marks meet refreshingly plausible answers.

From a small workshop in East London, independent bike brand Stayer Cycles are pioneering the often overlooked art of custom wheels, taking on the giants of the industry and breaking convention not just when it comes to spoke count.

There are exciting company stories not only in the UK, so our look behind the scenes at Beast Components shows how the Dresden based start-up company produces innovative carbon products in an old ammunition factory. A story about air taxis, lightweight construction and carbon secrets.
