Furkapass

Do you remember James Bond’s nerve-wracking Ford Mustang chase-scene in Sean Connery’s legendary Goldfinger movie?
Then you might also recall the striking image of the Furka Pass with the World-famous Bélvèdere Hotel on the Valais side to the west of the summit and the descent towards Andermatt.

And yet, the most beautiful and perhaps most famous climb goes from Andermatt through Realp up to 1538 m into the Ursental. From here the climb takes you to the 2436 m pass-summit. With a total length of 12.5 km, an average gradient of 7.3% and a total altitude gain of almost 900 metres, the Furka Pass classifies as a ‘Haute Categorie’ climb. In some of the sections you’re faced with gradients of up to 11% but these can be managed easily if you’re running the right gear ratio. Once you get to the pass summit you’ll be rewarded with an impressive view over the Gotthard massif and a superb descent past the Rhone glacier into Valais if you decide to turn your climb into a loop.
