Sa Calobra

Mallorca has long been one of the most popular winter-training locations for professional teams but also coffee-racers appreciate its mild climate when the weather turns nasty back home. Strictly speaking ‘Sa Calobra’ is not the right designation, but the name of the small village in the bay. And that’s where the ascent towards the Colls del Reis summit starts. ‘Sa Calobra’ however has established itself as the common name over the years. Call it what you want, one thing’s for sure: this is probably one of the best and most popular climbs on the entire island — and not just because of its impressive serpentines. With a length of 9.4 km and an average gradient of 7.1% with several sections of up to 11% the ‘Sa Calobra’ is a great fitness challenge. With a bit of luck you’ll even get to meet some of the pro teams on a training ride — and perhaps you could try to keep up with them! Alternatively, you can compare your efforts with thousands of riders on Strava. The current KOM of the official segment is 24:54 min whilst the QOM is 30:52 min.

The Sa Calobra might not be as hard or long as some of the big Alpine monsters but the 11% sections are still a good challenge. It’s also worth considering that this road is a dead end road: After descending into the small village you have to start your climb with cold legs.
