Presenting the 2021 Canyon Ultimate CFR Disc – The pursuit of lightness

The 2021 Canyon Ultimate CFR Disc road bike is out and, according to the manufacturer, the frame weighs just 641 g. The fork and cockpit have also been put on a diet. What else is new? Read on for all the specs, prices and photos.

The name Canyon Ultimate CF should ring a bell for every cycling enthusiast as the bike has been in the Tour-de-France peloton for years and has already carried numerous riders to the podium. According to Canyon, the Ultimate CF Evo Disc was the lightest disc specific, production road bike available, yet the engineers from Koblenz didn’t rest on their laurels and continued to work on the development of the Ultimate platform. The result is the Ultimate Canyon Factory Racing version, or simply CFR.

What’s new on the 2021 Canyon Ultimate CFR Disc?

The new CFR model is based on a new carbon layup made up of ultra-high-modulus (UHM) and ultra-high-tension (UHT) carbon fibres. While the UHM fibres are responsible in providing the necessary stiffness, the UHT fibres increase the strength of the frame, increasing its durability over the entire life cycle. According to Canyon, the stiffness-to-weight ratio of the new CFR Disc road bike has improved by almost 10% compared to the Ultimate CF SLX Disc.

The pursuit of lightness was, is and will always be an important benchmark in the performance of road bikes.

To reduce the weight of the already very light CF frame to 641 g for the new CFR version, Canyon looked at every detail and examined its potential for optimisation. During the course of doing so, the mount for the front mech has been integrated into the frame and made of carbon instead of the aluminium mount that was previously bolted onto the seat tube. Weight saved? Seven grams. To shave off another 3.5 grams, the bolt and thread of the seat post insert are now made out of titanium instead of steel. The thru axle has also been weight optimised. The newly developed Ultimate CFR thru axle is reserved exclusively for the new Ultimate CFR road bike, made of a special grade aluminium and supposed to offer the same performance characteristics at less weight.
