The kings of refined elegance return with the 4th generation of their infamous frameset. This time they are looking to take weight saving to the extreme while still maintaining all the characteristics that have made it a favourite for many with the new Canyon Ultimate CF EVO SL and LTD models.

The Ultimate, true to its name, has always been somewhat of a showcase of Canyon’s endeavour to maximise performance while minimising weight. The new Ultimate CF Evo and LTD models couple the new improved frame with a complimenting list of premium components that would make your eyes water. The stealth bomber-like aesthetic is broken only by a flash of colour on the top tube which defines each edition.

Canyon have allegedly gained special permission from the Japanese Ministry of Defence to access a type of fibre that claims to offer unheard levels of stiffness and responsiveness while maintaining a featherweight form. A proper ride test will be necessary to assess whether this secretive new carbon can match up to these promises but the new lay-up has shaved 135g off the previous model giving you a 665g frame and 270g fork. As a result, the SL and LTD models come in at a reputed 4.96 and 5.8 kg respectively so it seems they have definitely created a weight-weenie worthy machine and is almost certainly the reason for there not being a disc option.

With the new models breaking the bank of many a road enthusiast at €10,000 and €13,000, Canyon appears to be targeting not necessarily the die hard all weather enthusiast but more so the previously perceived “weekday boardroom weekend warrior”. Saying that, the higher end of the market has been moving towards bespoke builds in recent years so arguably they are being smart and extending their appeal to those wanting something a little bit different.

Supporting the price tag are some profoundly confident words stating that this is not a bike merely to adorn a wall but one to be ridden all year round and in all conditions. They do however offer the standalone frameset in mechanical and electric versions, priced at €3.299, which would allow you to build more of a suitable all year round bike with the frame that promises to deliver all year round performance.

It appears then that Canyon have effectively covered most bases in creating their dream road machine. With the two lavishly garnished complete options to choose from in the Canyon Ultimate CF EVO SL and Canyon Ultimate CF EVO LTD, and the option to purchase the frameset alone, it seems they are continuing their legacy of catering to a broad and enthusiastic market.
