A few years ago, disc brakes were the big new thing in the road bike segment – now it’s carbon spokes following suit: first a niche product, then a tech trend, and finally standard on top-tier models. And true to that pattern, the latest Vision Metron 45 RS performance wheels come fitted with carbon spokes. Only the in-house P.R.S. hubs still stick to a classic aluminium construction. At just 1,275 g, the new wheelset is significantly lighter than its predecessor, but it builds on the same performance-driven DNA.

In our aero wheel group test, the Vision Metron 60 SL already impressed with strong performance and low drag, although their weight – just under 1,600 g thanks to the deepest rims in the entire test field – was well above average. With the Metron 45 RS, Vision have tackled that exact issue, aiming to strike a balance between a lightweight climbing all-rounder and an aero-optimised race wheelset. Sounds like the recipe for a true all-round hit – but can the Metron 45 RS really deliver? It’s time to find out.

With a high hub flange and carbon spokes, the Vision Metron RS 45 deliver impressive stiffness, translating every pedal stroke into explosive acceleration.

On Review: What is the Vision Metron 45 RS Capable of?

On paper, the Vision Metron 45 RS ticks all the boxes you’d expect from a modern performance wheelset. With 45 mm rim depth, 23 mm internal width and an external width of 31.1 mm, it’s clearly designed around wide, fast and above all modern tires in the 28–32 mm range. The rims are hooked, which not only makes them compatible with virtually all tires, but also adds an extra layer of safety – you can read more about hooked vs hookless rims here.

A little one-off feature: the freehub on the Vision Metron RS 45 engages outward rather than along the axle.

And thanks to the classic hooked rim design, there’s no need to worry about tyres burping off or a pressure-sensitive setup.

At the heart of the Metron 45 RS are Vision’s in-house PRS hubs, which feature a ratchet freehub system that’s specifically designed to work with carbon spokes and a modern wheel construction. The big rear hub shell is particularly eye-catching, and Vision claim that this adds stiffness during hard efforts and under braking. The wheels are available with Shimano and SRAM freehubs, meaning that Campagnolo fans walk away empty-handed, because there’s no compatible freehub option at this time.

At just 1,275 g, these wheels clearly play in the lightweight league, but they’re not just made for the mountains. Vision deliberately aimed for a true all-rounder here, light and lively on the climbs, but equally confident on the flats. That attention to detail is obvious right from the tire installation. Fitting the Pirelli P Zero Race RS tires is a breeze, and the tubeless setup is equally hassle-free. A clever little touch: the valve nut sits flush thanks to an integrated stop inside the rim, which gives the wheel a clean, streamlined look and also ensures a more secure valve fit.

Paired with the Pirelli P ZERO Race RS tyres, the Vision Metron RS 45 deliver razor-sharp handling and a direct, responsive ride.

Easy to miss but smartly done: a small ridge at the valve keeps everything snug and makes tubeless setup hassle-free – the way it should be.

That good first impression continues the moment you roll off. The distinctive hum of the freehub matches the aggressive, yet not over-the-top appearance of the wheels. The pick-up is immediate and punchy, and the whole bike feels eager to respond. Thanks to the carbon spokes and oversized hubs, the ride feels extremely direct and sharp – encouraging you to sprint and push harder.

When the road points uphill, the Metron 45 RS proves that the low system weight isn’t just impressive on the scales. Even on steep climbs, every watt is efficiently converted into forward motion. The wheels remain composed and precise, never twitchy or unpredictable. And if you’re chasing speed on the flats, you won’t be disappointed either. The aero rim profile and wide carbon spokes deliver a noticeable level of efficiency. Despite the modest rim depth, the wheels surprise with strong aerodynamic performance and a decent sailing effect in crosswinds.

Aero meets low weight: the Vision Metron RS 45 picks up speed on any terrain. A true all-rounder built for high pace.

One of the biggest surprises is the wheels’compliance. Carbon spokes often have a reputation for feeling harsh and unforgiving, but Vision have clearly taken a more balanced approach. Yes, these wheels feel firm, especially if you’re coming from plush endurance wheels, but for a performance setup, the balance between stiffness and comfort is spot-on. No watts go to waste, yet the ride never feels so brutally stiff that long rides become a chore.

Do you really need the Vision Metron 45 RS?

Yes – if you’re after more than just a lightweight, fast wheelset. The Metron 45 RS are true all-rounders with race pedigree. Thanks to their low system weight, modern rim profile and well-thought-out hub and spoke design, these wheels shine across the board. They climb brilliantly, roll efficiently and, most importantly, are an absolute blast to ride. Add in some genuinely useful everyday features – easy tire installation, tubeless-ready compatibility and high-quality construction – and you’ve got a package that’s as practical as it is performance-oriented. If you’ve been eyeing up the big-name wheel brands, the Vision Metron 45 RS definitely deserves a spot on your wishlist.
