We tested the upside-down version, which is designed to mount beneath your bars, and combined it with the AIRSTREAM TAIL LIGHT 2.But is it hot or not?

Whether you’re training through the dark months, grinding out a long bikepacking stage or chasing your mates down the side of a mountain at night – a powerful front light is a must. It keeps you safe, lets you enjoy the ride and ultimately makes you want to do it all over again. That’s why good lighting is non-negotiable. German manufacturer Supernova has just the thing:the AIRSTREAM 2, which retails at € 199.

The housing is both lightweight and tough. This comes as no surprise, given that it’s made from a type of aluminium that’s widely used in the aerospace industry. According to Supernova, the AIRSTREAM 2 also boasts excellent thermal properties, which should keep it running bright and reliably over long distances. We didn’t waste any time and strapped the upside-down version under our bars to see how it performs.

Upside-down? Sounds like we’re talking suspension forks – but not this time! In the world of bike lights, upside-down refers to models that are mounted underneath the handlebars. This reversed setup offers a few clear advantages, along with one or two drawbacks – but more on that later. The AIRSTREAM 2 leaves a strong first impression. The CNC-machined aluminium housing with integrated cooling fins looks sleek and robust, while the total system weight including the universal mount is 177 g. To stay visible from behind, we also included the AIRSTREAM TAIL LIGHT 2 in this test, which we mounted to the seatpost and weighs around 44 g. What makes it special? Unlike most rear lights, this one doesn’t need its own battery, as it draws the power directly from the headlight via a cable – neat and efficient.

Setup is a breeze. The stretchy rubber strap lets you mount the light quickly and securely. With everything in place, we were keen to get rolling and see how it performs in the dark.

On Test: What is the Supernova AIRSTREAM 2 Capable of?

At just under 11 cm in length and with a maximum front diameter of 41 mm, the AIRSTREAM 2 is a compact headlight. Its silhouette strongly resembles a classic torch with a slim handle. Supernova added cooling fins at the transition between the broader lamp head and the narrow body to help dissipate heat more efficiently, and to extend both the lifespan and performance of the LEDs.

Not only do the fins look smart, but also round off the overall design, ensuring a seamless, solid look that radiates durability. And the 5-year warranty provides the proverbial icing on the cake!.

Thanks to Supernova’s in-house TERRAFLUX 4 lens, the AIRSTREAM 2 promises near-perfect illumination of the road ahead. And when it comes to long-distance visibility, it really delivers! The beam is wide, uniform and well-balanced.

Supernova don’t provide exact figures for range, but it’s clear that the AIRSTREAM 2 handles distance brilliantly. On the other hand, it noticeably lacks near-field illumination directly in front of the wheel. There’s definitely room for improvement in this regard, especially on technical, twisty trails and in dense forests, where solid illumination is crucial to spot rocks and roots. This is where the AIRSTREAM 2 still has some catching up to do.

The USD (upside-down) mounting position ensures a clean, clutter-free cockpit, and also makes the AIRSTREAM 2 compatible with modern one-piece carbon cockpits. Apart from that, the USD version is ideal for mounting underneath your head unit. That setup does come with a small trade-off though: the mount partially blocks the power button, which also houses the battery level indicator. It’s a minor downside, but one worth noting if you’re after a cockpit that’s tidy from the pilot’s perspective. The aero mount is available separately for € 49.90.

A quick double-click brings the light to life, and powers it up straight into its brightest setting. Single clicks cycle through the four available brightness modes. The lowest setting, however, doesn’t really cut it for proper night-time riding, so we used it as a daytime running light instead. The international version also includes a flashing mode, which can be activated with another double-click. Due to its StVZO approval, the German version omits this feature. Depending on the mode selected, Supernova claim a battery runtime of between 2.5 and 14 hours. Those figures proved pretty accurate in our lab test: the AIRSTREAM 2 ran continuously for 3 hours and 20 minutes, with around 2 of those hours in its highest setting –after which the brightness is automatically reduced. With the tail light plugged in, the total runtime drops to roughly 3 hours. Two small LEDs, one green and one red, sit on either side of the power button and indicate the battery charge status.

The AIRSTREAM 2’s charging port is located on the underside of the unit and is covered by a small protective cap – which, unfortunately, isn’t attached to the light itself. That’s a real drawback, as it’s all too easy to lose… as we found out the hard way ourselves! This same port is also used to connect the TAIL LIGHT 2, which just might be the smallest and lightest rear light in the world! With no built-in battery, the tail light is impressively compact, but does require a wired connection to the front light. The Supernova Airstream 2 bundle comes standard with a 1.2 m cable that can be shortened if needed – but not below the minimum required length of 50 cm.

Installation is simple: just wrap the cable around the top tube and plug it into the AIRSTREAM 2. Thanks to its natural tension, the cable stays in place with minimal rattling. It’s a clean-looking setup,provided your frame allows for internal cable routing and you can adjust the cable length accordingly. For commuters who can’t securely lock up their daily ride, the wired rear light is less than ideal. Wrapping the cable around the frame makes removing the light more time-consuming than a battery-powered alternative. That said, there’s one big plus: if you leave the tail light permanently installed, there’s no extra battery to charge. The version we tested features three bright LEDs that are clearly visible from the rear and sides. However, brightness can’t be adjusted.

Do You Need the Upside-Down Version of the Supernova AIRSTREAM 2?

Our Verdict: Yes, You Do! The bright, even beam pattern of the AIRSTREAM 2 delivers excellent long-range visibility, while the sleek aluminium housing is as tough as it is beautiful. Thanks to its powerful output and solid runtime, the AIRSTREAM 2 proved a reliable companion throughout autumn and winter. That said, the upside-down mounting can be fiddly depending on your handlebar setup and cable routing. That’s why we see the upside-down version best suited for permanent installation. The same goes for the rear light, which is also better left on the bike due to the cable connection. If there’s one area that needs improvement, it’s the near-field illumination. But overall, for riders looking for a clean cockpit, premium build and dependable performance, the upside-down AIRSTREAM 2 is a clear yes from us.

Would We Buy the Supernova AIRSTREAM 2?

Yes, we would. The AIRSTREAM 2 won us over with its brightness, long-lasting battery and rugged aluminium housing. Add Supernova’s strong warranty and focus on sustainability, and the € 199 price tag feels more than justified. As for the TAIL LIGHT 2, we’d only recommend it if you’re planning to install it permanently and with the cable routed internally. The wired power supply makes it less practical for bikes where lights are removed on a regular basis.
