Designed to offer loads of grip, solid reliability and a sporty character, this all-rounder promises to perform not just in fast-paced races but also during training and on long-distance rides. But can the S-Works Turbo TLR live up to those high expectations and hold its own against the fierce competition?

As the tubeless version of the legendary Turbo Cotton, the new Turbo TLR features a completely overhauled, fully vulcanised construction. Specialized market it as an all-season racing tire that’s lightweight and robust, yet capable of delivering the performance needed to stay ahead of the pack, whatever the conditions. Visually, it stays true to the Turbo lineage, with its fast central tread and grippy shoulders, giving it that familiar sporty look. But the real question is, how does it perform out on the road?

Virtually Limitless Grip – The Specialized S-Works Turbo TLR in Our 2025 Road Tire Test

Bold claims, but do they hold up in testing? When it comes to efficiency, the Turbo TLR can’t quite keep up with the fastest in the field. With a rolling resistance of 15.1 watts, it’s among the slower tires on test, trailing its direct racing rivals by around 3 watts and sitting roughly 4 watts behind the class-leading Continental GP 5000 S TR. That said, it still rolls smoothly and maintains speed well, though its acceleration is less punchy than expected, especially given its relatively low weight. Where the Turbo TLR truly stands out in terms of grip. No other tire on test is capable of offering the same level of traction. Whether it’s on tarmac, light gravel or wet roads, the Turbo TLR sticks to the surface with remarkable tenacity, staying composed even at the limit. The braking performance is equally impressive, delivering eye-popping deceleration and a reassuring sense of control. When it comes to cornering, it feels precise and well-balanced, responding to input quickly, though without ever feeling twitchy, and thereby striking the ideal middle ground between racy agility and everyday stability.

Regarding compliance, the Turbo TLR offers a comfortable ride and noticeably more damping than the likes of the Pirelli TLR, though it falls just short of the plush feel of the Michelin Power Cup TLE. Overall, the ride feels sporty yet controlled, with a reassuring level of feedback. The Turbo TLR proves its capability on cobblestones and loose gravel, offering decent grip and enough cushioning to mitigate harsher impacts, which is a strong showing for a performance-focused tire like the S-Works Turbo TLR. The fit of the bead is on the tighter side, much like the Pirelli, but manageable with tire levers. Once installed, the Turbo TLR seals quickly and reliably. In terms of puncture protection, it sits slightly above average – not quite at the level of the top performers from Continental, Maxxis or Schwalbe, but still respectable for an all-round race tire.

Conclusion on the Specialized S-Works Turbo TLR

The new S-Works Turbo TLR impresses as a versatile all-rounder, offering outstanding grip, good comfort, and confident handling, whether you’re racing or out on a training ride. While its efficiency falls slightly short of the top-tier models, and puncture protection isn’t quite what you might expect, the Turbo TLR makes up for it with excellent handling and a sporty feel. For riders who spend all year on the road, the grippy Specialized S-Works Turbo TLR is a top choice.
