POC Omne Air SPIN and POC AID – News from Sweden

POC presented the new all-round helmet Omne Air SPIN helmet as well as the POC AID range at Eurobike, a future-oriented safety system that could save lives. We’ve got all the news at a glance.

POC is one of the leading manufacturers of helmets, glasses, protectors, clothing and accessories for bicycles. The Swedish brand has set itself the goal of doing everything possible to reduce cycling accidents, or even to save lives. With Omne Air, POC wants to offer its proven SPIN safety system at a lower price point. Meanwhile, in collaboration with partners from the automotive industry such as Volvo and Scania, the Swedes are exploring innovative road safety concepts in a project named POC AID.

The POC Omne Air SPIN is a helmet for road cyclists and commuters. It’s been equipped with an optimised EPS liner and features POC’s patented SPIN impact protection system, designed to provide protection against lateral impact forces. Thanks to the optimised density of the core zones of the liner and the matching helmet shell, it is built nice and compact. Also, a large number of adjustment options, such as the 360° adjustment system and the precisely fitting straps, promise a comfortable and secure fit. The Omne Air SPIN is part of the 2019 spring collection and will soon be available in stores for € 160. It’s available in seven colour variations, weighing a mere 280 g.

POC AID

The POC AID program is an in-house project that looks for new ways to prevent collisions between cyclists and cars. Besides reflective and innovative lighting elements being integrated into the products, they’re working on developing digital solutions to facilitate the exchange of information between vehicles and cyclists. According to the POC, these active security systems are no longer a dream of the future.

In 2016, the company introduced the Corpora, a commuter helmet whose LEDs light up brightly as soon as the rider brakes. POC wants to build on this platform and is currently working on a helmet with an integrated safety system that acoustically notifies the cyclist about vehicles in his immediate vicinity. In cooperation with Swedish car manufacturer Volvo, POC presented a prototype in 2015 that is capable of “communicating” with the vehicles in the vicinity. The current developments in this concept are based on the so-called “Map of Consequences”, which maps 14 potential conflict situations between cyclists and motorists. Swedish engineers are currently working on solutions for these situations. For example, a noise or light signal from the helmet should warn the cyclist of an opening car door or a turning vehicle. Similarly, the driver should be warned of the approaching cyclist. POC is also working on ways to allow the system to automatically call for help in case of an accident.
