When it comes to bike companies providing women with decent bikes, ones that take seriously their ambition and capabilities, there are few companies that manage it. So it’s a breath of fresh air when a bike company such as Fons Bikes enters the market. And guess what? They even build bikes, for women, with Dura Ace Di2.

With almost 91,000 colour combinations Fons have definitely taken it seriously when they said that they wanted to give women options. Available in both caliper and disc options with groupsets ranging from lower level Shimano, to Ultegra Di2 and including Shimano Dura-Ace Di2. Being a Dutch brand they decided to go Dutch with wheel brand Scope, offering their R3 (30 mm), R4 (45 mm) and R5 (55 mm) to equip the climbers out there as well as the sprinters. With only one model they claim this bike has a stiffness to it that stands up to testing descents but also has components that gift comfort where needed too.

Their website functionality should also be appaulded for its easy navigation when customising your bike. The only criticism is it lacks detail on the bikes specifications, geometry and componentry. But they state they are happy to talk with clients about other componentry configurations than the ones specified on the site. The entry level bike is priced at € 1,995 inc. VAT. and then guides you as you add different wheels, groupsets etc.

Fons Strada

Fons say they took inspiration to pioneer and become the first female only bike brand from one woman in particular – Alfonsina Strada. This fine lady, back in 1924, decided that in a time when women were not allowed to show their knees, she was going to line up alongside the men at the start of the Giro d’Italia – and race it with them. To this day she is the only female to have completed a Giro. Let’s just hope that brands like Fons don’t remain one of a kind.
