MAXXIS are one of the world’s largest tire manufacturers, and they’ve been active in the gravel market for years. So, our gravel tire group test wouldn’t be complete without a model from the US brand – click here for our review of the MAXXIS Rambler SilkShield TR. MAXXIS position the new Receptor between the Rambler and the high-volume Velocita, designed primarily for the road and occasional excursions on gravel and forest paths. According to the manufacturer, the Receptor performs best on asphalt roads and compacted gravel; they don’t recommend demanding off-road use. Thanks to the dense 120 TPI fabric, the tire promises a comfortable ride while keeping the weight to a minimum, and the DualCompound should offer a good balance between rolling resistance and traction. Borrowing technology from their mountain bike range, MAXXIS rely on the protective EXO layer for the Receptor, so you don’t have to grit your teeth every time you spot a sharp object. Read our review to find out whether the gravel tire could prove itself on the tough slopes of Tuscany.

Compared to other tires such as the Panaracer GravelKing SK, which is available in countless widths, the Receptor only comes in two versions: either in the wide 650 x 47B version or in the large 700 x 40C version (with a tanwall option in the pipeline). In our opinion, 40C offers a good compromise between weight, volume and rolling resistance and should be compatible with most modern gravel frames.

Putting the MAXXIS Receptor to the test

We tested the Receptor on the ROSE BACKROAD, fitted on carbon rims with an internal width of 24 mm. Fitting the tire was super easy and can be done without tire levers. When you push down on the pedals, the tire proves to be nimble on gravel and asphalt, getting up to speed in a flash. The smooth profile and relatively low weight both contribute to this characteristic. There was only one tire in our group test that weighs less at the same width.

However, once brought up to speed, the Receptor requires you to keep on pedalling to stay there. You’ll find tires that are more efficient on flat terrain. As soon as you hit the first corner, MAXXIS’ new tire will bring a smile to your face. It’s noticeably more agile than its big brother – the more aggressive Rambler. The cornering grip is top-notch on asphalt and instils you with confidence, though you’ll have to be more careful on loose gravel as you explore the tire’s limits. The shoulder knobs don’t take hold until the last moment, and it shows clearly that the tire is designed for asphalt roads and compacted surfaces. For detours along trails and rough terrain, you’ll find more appropriate tires. On the brakes, the MAXXIS tire offers a lot of grip and reliably brings your bike to a halt without sliding. The Receptor also performs well in terms of comfort. Whether on poorly maintained roads or gravel, it effectively absorbs all irregularities, allowing you to glide along the gravel motorways of this world in comfort.

Our conclusion on the MAXXIS Receptor

With the Receptor, MAXXIS have developed a sensible alternative to the Velocita and Rambler, at home on asphalt roads and compacted surfaces. The gravel tire impressed us with its acceleration, agility and comfort. However, the Receptor is out of its depth in rougher terrain – there are more aggressively profiled and suitable tires for off-road use.

Tops

  • good acceleration
  • pleasant vibration damping
  • good braking performance
  • agile handling

Flops

  • easily overwhelmed on trails
