A stylish design, clever aerodynamic features, and carbon in every direction – we’re talking the Canyon Ultimate CF SLX 9.0 Pro with a Campagnolo Record groupset and Shamal Mille wheelset. The ultimate lightweight dream in carbon, it’s clearly an aspiration that united more than 7,000 readers – but unfortunately we only had one to give away for free in the first issue’s prize draw.

Framed by white concrete, the glass-fronted building reflects the clouds. You can’t miss the iconic Canyon logo, those six bold, slanted letters proudly on the wall. We’re at the headquarters in Koblenz, Germany and we’d brought our winner Frank along with us, who was equally as curious for a glance behind the scenes. After the tour he’d ceremoniously receive his prize: the Canyon Ultimate CF SLX 9.0 Pro. Something worth waiting for.

After a quick cappuccino, we’re guided through the new production line, the warehouse, showroom and testing lab. Frank’s eagerness for the bike is momentarily satiated as he takes in the surroundings – but it comes back with a vengeance once we’re stood in front of his new whip. He surveys it in detail, nodding approvingly at the frame, the Campagnolo groupset, aero bars and Canyon’s own seatpost with the smart, colour-coordinated Fizik Antares saddle. Then it’s time for the bike fit.

Although the forecast had predicted rain, it was yet to reach Koblenz so we set off for a ride, with Frank on his new Ultimate. The team at Canyon suggest their local loop, one that sets out along the River Mosel. They ask if we feel like climbing, and Frank doesn’t hesitate before replying in the affirmative. He makes his move pretty early on and we’re more than impressed. It’s just a short ride for him, he says, as he usually doesn’t ride less than 100 km, more often knocking on the door of 200 km. His personal goal is to ride 500 km.

Once we hit the top of the climb it’s time to descend. Down in the aero tuck, we’re wowed by momentary views over the Mosel and the undulating landscape. The final part of the descent has some amazing hairpins down to the river. After this little appetizer, we want another climb, and it’s great fun. Frank’s stories of rides he’s done and former bikes he has owned are entertaining, and as someone who works 70 hours/week, the time he spends on two wheels are there for a purpose: clear his head, enjoy the freedom. The essence of the good life, he isn’t averse to a good refreshment stop on his rides either. After all, it’s about the enjoyment and not necessarily the exertion.

But all good things come to an end, and the Mosel shows us the way back towards the HQ. But wait, what’s that? There’s a sprint up ahead for the city limits sign. Frank clinches it, then Björn from Canyon, then marketing manager Julian in their wake. It isn’t over yet though. Where’s the next sign? Who cares? Perhaps there are some Strava segments here.

We’re out of breath as we get back to the Canyon showroom. A quick shower and another coffee later, it’s confirmed that the Ultimate is in good hands. Its first ride is already on the agenda: an easy 200 km. No KOM hunting, just a beer at the end, good food and good friends. We realize that our expertise is no longer needed, so we head off. Cheers and have a good ride, Frank!
