With the new Aerodynamicist 44/46, HUNT promise to deliver a true all-rounder among carbon wheelsets, combining low weight, aerodynamic efficiency, and wide tire optimization – all in one complete package. And despite all that, the British brand have kept the price below € 1,500. We put HUNT’s latest wheelset to the test to find out how well their jack-of-all-trades really deals with tarmac, climbs, and crosswinds.

With the new Aerodynamicist 44/46, HUNT set themselves a clear goal: raise the bar for carbon wheels in the mid-price segment. We already had the privilege of visiting HUNT Bike Wheels in Partridge Green last year. Now, we’ve put their new Aerodynamicist through the wringer. At the heart of the update are wider internal rim widths, dedicated front and rear profiles, and a total weight of under 1,400 g. They feature traditional hooked rims and have been optimised for 28 to 30 mm tires – you’ll find suitable options in our big 2025 road bike tire group test. By going with hooked rims, HUNT are deliberately bucking the hookless trend and prioritising maximum safety, at least for this wheelset.

Compared to its bigger sibling in the line-up – the stiffer and more expensive HUNT SUB50, which impressed us in our 2024 carbon wheel group test with its punchy acceleration and pronounced sailing effect – the Aerodynamicist takes a different approach. It aims to shine as an all-rounder, focusing on aero performance, everyday usability and comfort. But how does the updated model actually perform out in the real world – on tarmac, during sprints, and on descents? We put the wheelset to the test to find out, telling you everything you need to know!

On Test: What Is the HUNT Aerodynamicist 44/46 Really Capable Of?

We put the new HUNT Aerodynamicist 44/46 wheelset through its paces over the course of several months in a wide variety of conditions. Our test setup featured 30 mm tubeless tires from both Schwalbe and Continental, with the rims laced to steel spokes.

One thing stands out from the get-go: the combination of the wide internal rim widths and a classic hooked design provides a solid, secure fit. Both the Continental and Schwalbe tires sit firmly on the rims, and the tubeless setup seals straight away – even without sealant. No mess, no need to top up the air – exactly how it should be. Visually, the setup looks like it was made for 30 mm tires. There’s no ballooning or awkward bulges, just a clean, balanced silhouette that looks spot on.

That premium impression carries over onto the road. Acceleration feels direct and efficient – not quite as explosive as top of the range full-carbon wheelsets, but by no means sluggish. It quickly becomes clear that the Aerodynamicist prioritises balance over specialisation. The wheelset is stiff enough to accelerate quickly and offer precise steering through high-speed corners, though it never feels overly stiff or unforgiving.

The moderate weight really comes into its own on the climbs. You don’t get that featherlight climbing sensation, but there’s a consistent responsiveness that keeps you motivated on long ascents. The handling feels sharp and controlled, delivering precise steering and allowing the bike to stay composed even at highe speeds. Thanks to the 44/46 mm rim depths, you also get a touch of that sailing effect on flat terrain, despite any noticeable susceptibility to crosswinds. The wheelset remains stable even during strong gusts, largely thanks to the shallower 44 mm rim up front.

Paired with 30 mm tires, the ride is pleasantly smooth. While not quite on the level of an endurance wheelset, it’s noticeably more comfortable than many aero wheelsets in its class. That added compliance is particularly noticeable on stiffer frames. If you prefer a slightly sharper feel, switching to 28 mm tires tightens up the handling without detracting from the wheelset’s essential character. Alternatively, you can opt for the version with carbon spokes. According to the ETRTO chart, the rims are approved for tires measuring between 25 and 50 mm in width, though the sweet spot clearly lies between 28 and 32 mm.

Ultimately, the Aerodynamicist 44/46 offers a well-balanced combination of efficiency, control and everyday usability, topped off with HUNT’s familiar buzz coming from the rear hub.

Fortunately, for some at least, the hub sounds less piercing than the more aggressive SUB models.

Who Is the HUNT Aerodynamicist 44/46 For?

The HUNT Aerodynamicist 44/46 offers a well-rounded package with modern rim geometry, low weight, and solid on-road performance. They’re neither ultra-light nor aggressively aero, but it’s this very balance that makes them so good. The latest development from southern England’s wheel experts is aimed at riders looking for a versatile wheelset that doesn’t just excel at one specific discipline, but rather performs equally well on your everyday training rides as it does on all-day outings, during races or fast-paced group rides. If you’re after a dependable all-rounder that you can leave on your bike all year round, this might be it.
