W. L. Gore & Associates are pulling the plug on their GOREWEAR division. Following a “careful analysis of long-term prospects,” the company has concluded there’s no viable path to meeting its commercial goals, despite significant investment in its long-standing performance apparel brand.

GOREWEAR had deep roots in the European cycling scene. Back in 1984, Gore launched the first GORE-TEX road cycling jacket, setting a benchmark for weather protection and technical precision that would shape the industry for decades.

The company stated:

Gore’s Fabrics business has made the difficult decision to close our GOREWEAR cycling and running apparel business after over 40 years of dedication and hard work. Despite our best efforts, we faced significant challenges that made it difficult to continue in a highly competitive landscape. We’re incredibly grateful for the loyalty the cycling industry has shown us. Together, we’ve pushed the boundaries in the cycling and running apparel worlds and helped athletes gear up for every weather and every adventure. Our focus is now on supporting our Associates and ensuring a smooth transition while honoring our business partners’ commitments until March 31, 2026. It’s been an unforgettable journey —and one of our greatest journeys yet.

The decision marks a major turning point for the cycling apparel sector. GOREWEAR were one of the few brands offering complete collections — from jerseys to waterproof trousers — all made using proprietary materials like GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY and GORE-TEX INFINIUM.

Their departure is symptomatic of the pressure facing the premium cycling market. Even heavyweight brands are battling decreasing sales and shrinking margins. Rapha, for example, posted its eighth consecutive year of losses, with a recent operating deficit of £17.2 million. Rising production costs, cautious consumer spending and a move away from aggressive discounting are making the market increasingly tough.

With GOREWEAR stepping back, the cycling world is losing a major driver of innovation — a brand that set the standard for waterproof and breathable riding gear. That said, GORE-TEX material technologies are here to stay. They’ll continue to be used by a wide range of outdoor and cycling brands. For customers and retailers, orders can still be placed until 31 March 2026. After that, only remaining stock will be sold off.

GOREWEAR’s exit is a stark reminder of just how challenging the premium cycling apparel market has become — even for the most established names like Rapha. Whether Gore will shift focus entirely to supplying technologies and materials, or look to partner with other labels, remains to be seen. One thing’s certain though: with the closure of GOREWEAR, the industry is losing a name that, more than almost any other, stood for dependable weather protection on the bike.
