The BMC race-bike family is growing fast! With their new aluminium Teammachine ALR the Swiss premium manufacturer wants to make the performance segment accessible to everyone. Starting at € 1,299 the aluminium version of the popular Teammachine model wants to offer top performance at an affordable price. We took a closer look at the new aluminium beauty from Switzerland.

After introducing their new all-road adventurer the BMC Roadmachine X — which we have already tested — BMC is now launching a new aluminium racer called the Teammachine ALR.

In our first 2018 race-bike test the Teammachine SLR01 missed the victory by a whisker proving that the Swiss racing machine has a lot of potential. The genes of the high-end carbon SLR01 Disc model have now been transplanted into the new aluminium version. It’s light, stiff and according to BMC it accelerates like a true pro rig.

The bottom bracket is just as stiff as the one of the SLR0 top-end carbon version

In terms of stiffness the new aluminium version gets pretty damn close to the SLR carbon version. According to BMC the bottom bracket is just as stiff as the high-end carbon version and the head tube only misses a fraction compared to the SLR01. The rear-end was designed to be almost as stiff as the one of the carbon version. The main aim of BMC’s engineers was to offer the highest possible level of performance at a very affordable price.

According to BMC the head tube …
… and rear-end are almost as stiff as on the SLR01

Stiffness is great but what about riding comfort? The BMC Teammachine ALR01 features BMC’s ACE-Technology carbon fork and D-Shape seat post — the same system featured on BMC’s SLR01 top-end model. Not bad at all! With its asymmetrical design the ACE Technology carbon fork features a chunkier fork leg on the disc side. This is meant to improve compliance without affecting performance — a system that according to BMC is way more effective than just increasing the wall thickness on the disc-side of a fork.

The ACE Technology carbon fork is chunkier on the disc leg. This design is meant to improve the compliance of the bike.

The D-Shape seat post already managed to convince us when we tested the BMC Teammachine SLR01 Disc. The flat shaped rear-end improves riding comfort and so does the integrated seat clamp which allows for an additional 1-2 cm seatpost extension.

Extra comfort! The integrated seatpost allows for an extra 1-2 cm extension of the seatpost

In true BMC-fashion the flattened seat stays sit low on the seat tube and allow for additional comfort.

The flat seat stays are designed to improve riding comfort on the Teammachine ALR

The geometry of the Teammachine ALR is entirely based on its big carbon cousin. Everything is pretty much the same except for the 10 mm longer head tube which allows for an extra slice of comfort and a slightly more relaxed sitting position. The BMC will be available in five sizes: 47, 51, 54, 57 and 60.

The most important features at a glance

Our take on the BMC Teammachine ALR01

With the new Teammachine ALR-line BMC is launching a price-aggressive performance package that is based on BMC’s high-end technologies. We were particularly intrigued with the BMC ALR01 model just because the disc setup reflects the current trends and is certainly a great option for everyone. For € 1,999 you’ll get a good package in a slick black stealth look. We can’t wait to take her out on a first ride.
