In 2026, gravel has long outgrown its original niche status, developing into a popular discipline with highly differentiated niches of its own. The German manufacturer Schwalbe has responded to this shift with some rigorous further development of its G-One gravel tire family. Behind the brand stands the family-owned company Ralf Bohle GmbH, from Reichshof in Germany, which has shaped the cycling world for over 50 years. From humble beginnings, importing the first “Swallow” tires from Korea in 1973, the brand began to develop their own proprietary designs, growing into the global success story we see today. Schwalbe was one of the pioneers in establishing tubeless systems, and the original G-One Allround was one of the foundational tires of the gravel boom.
In our big 2026 gravel tire group test, one thing is clear: Schwalbe delivers outstanding performance across the board, occupying top spots for both dedicated racers and everyday adventurers alike.
The Different Rubber Compounds and Casings in Detail
To understand the current Schwalbe tires, you first have to navigate the jungle of marketing terms. For the latest generation, the development team in Reichshof has fine-tuned three key areas: the compound, the puncture protection belt, and the casing construction. The goal: to translate German laboratory efficiency into real-world Gravel performance at their factory in Vietnam, without compromising puncture protection.
The Pro Label: How to Identify the Top Models
Visually, Schwalbe now mark their high-end models uniformly with the Pro label and the iconic blue logo, which was previously reserved solely for professional use. Technically, this means that wherever you see “Pro”, you’re getting the Race Pro construction and the Addix Race compound. For the aesthetes, Schwalbe also offers a choice: all models are now available in both all-black or with a classic brown sidewall (tanwall).
Addix Race: The Dual Compound Principle
Instead of relying on a single rubber compound across the whole tread, Schwalbe uses a dual compound construction for the new Addix Race tires. The logic is sound: a harder compound is used on the center tread to minimise rolling resistance and increase mileage. Moving toward the sidewalls, the compound becomes significantly softer. This “shoulder compound” is designed to provide the necessary grip, especially in wet conditions and fast corners, where the often minimalist tread pattern might otherwise struggle.
Race Pro: The Evolution of the Casing
The well-known “Super Race” casing has evolved into the Race Pro casing. The tire’s “skeleton” has been tweaked to roll more smoothly. In practice, higher compliance means the tire requires less energy to deform over obstacles. Schwalbe has managed to improve these rolling characteristics without driving up the weight – a decisive factor in why even the heavy G-One Overland Pro performs so efficiently in the lab.
V-Guard: A Wider Shield Against Punctures
For puncture protection, Schwalbe rely on their proven V-Guard high tech fibre. Since gravel tires are frequently ridden with low air pressures, with more of the surface in contact with the ground, Schwalbe have widened their puncture protection strip to cover a larger area. This reduces the risk of sharp objects piercing the casing in the transition zones toward the sidewall.
Schwalbe are taking a systemic approach to sustainability, focusing their efforts primarily on the end of a product’s life cycle. While competitors like Vittoria are increasingly prioritising the use of renewable raw materials within the tyre casing, the team at Ralf Bohle GmbH are concentrating on building a closed-loop circular economy.
The heart of this initiative is the recycling system they launched in 2022. Used tyres are collected via specialist retailers and sent to a partner facility, where a bespoke process breaks them down into their core components. This method produces recovered carbon black, a high-quality secondary raw material that flows directly back into the production of brand-new Schwalbe tyres. According to the company, this innovative process cuts CO2 emissions by 80% compared to the standard practice of incinerating old tyres.
The Schwalbe Gravel Tire Test Field at a Glance
To make the performance of the various tire concepts more tangible, we sent the entire range through laboratory testing, as well as riding them across our test tracks. The following overview clearly shows how distinctly Schwalbe differentiates each model: while the race specialists are trimmed for minimal weight and record-breaking rolling resistance, the all-round and adventure models rely on greater volume and reinforced casings to meet the specific demands of e-bikers and bikepackers.
| Model | Compound | Weight | Rolling Resistance | Dimensions (ETRTO) | Country of Manufacture | Price (RRP) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| G-One RS Pro | Addix Race | 516 g | 10.6 W | 45-622 | Vietnam | € 74.90 |
| G-One R Pro | Addix Race | 548 g | 12.2 W | 45-622 | Vietnam | € 74.90 |
| Thunder Burt | Addix Speed | 570 g | 13.0 W | 54-622 (2.1″) | Vietnam | € 68.90 |
| G-One RX Pro | Addix Race | 589 g | 13.9 W | 45-622 | Vietnam | € 74.90 |
| G-One Overland Pro | Addix SpeedGrip | 590 g | 14.1 W | 45-622 | Vietnam | € 74.90 |
At the top of the speed hierarchy stands the Schwalbe G-One RS Pro. It is the undisputed specialist for dry conditions and fast race courses. With a lab-confirmed rolling resistance of just 10.6 W, it pulverizes the competition, securing the title of fastest tire in the field. However, it pays for this efficiency with handling that shows a certain sluggishness. The tire holds a line as if on rails, but requires significant body input to tackle tight corners. For those chasing maximum speed in 2026, you won’t find a better partner.
The G-One R Pro delivers significantly more balanced riding characteristics, positioning itself as the deserved “Best Value” choice among race gravel tires. With its iconic boomerang-shaped tread profile, it offers extremely predictable handling and inspires immediate confidence on almost any surface. While it rolls a bit slower than the RS Pro at 12.2 W, it shines with outstanding puncture protection and high agility, making it the ideal companion for technical courses.
The biggest surprise of the year, however, is the G-One RX Pro, which takes the overall victory for best all-round gravel tire. Schwalbe promised maximum off-road performance here, and they well and truly deliver. Despite its coarse profile, it rolls remarkably efficiently at just 13.9 W. Speed isn’t the full story though. Its true strength lies off-road: it offers the best grip in Schwalbe’s gravel range – and some of the best in the entire test field – combining this with the second-highest puncture protection in the test. It’s hard to find anything to complain about.
The G-One Overland Pro was developed for adventurers and long-distance riders. It is designed for maximum reliability for bikepacking and e-gravel. At 590 g, it is the heaviest model in the lineup, yet it’s surprisingly efficient, with just 14.1 W of rolling resistance. Its handling is tuned for stability, making it the premier choice for long days, especially when riding with a full load.
The Thunder Burt acts as the “wildcard” in the test field. Originally developed as a mountain bike tire, it offers impressive performance on a gravel bike, with a rolling resistance of 13.0 W. Thanks to its measured width of 51 mm, it offers compliance and grip that narrower tires cannot match, although it does lose some ground in the puncture protection category.
Which is the Best Schwalbe Gravel Tire?
Our testing showed some interesting results, but one thing was clear – Schwalbe have produced a range of highly differentiated tires that each offer excellent versatility. Ambitious racers hunting for personal bests, who primarily ride on paved paths, will love the uncompromising efficiency of the G-One RS Pro. To increase agility and grip, this tire makes an excellent rear tire combined with a G-One R Pro or RX Pro on the front wheel.
The standout for the masses is the G-One RX Pro. As our All-Round Best in Test, it offers the best overall package in the test field. It is the logical choice for riders who demand a high level of efficiency, yet don’t shy away from more challenging surfaces. It is the go-to tire for riders who refuse to compromise on grip and puncture protection.
Alongside it, the G-One R Pro stands out as our Best Buy for race gravel tires. If you are looking for a “worry-free package” for the entire year, but want to maintain a focus on racing and speed, you have found your match. It covers 90% of all use cases, rolls faster than the RX Pro, and offers confidence with its impressive puncture protection. An excellent tire that proves race performance and versatility can go hand in hand.
The range is rounded off by the G-One Overland Pro. This versatile “mileage eater” looks great on almost any bike. It performs excellently for everything from bikepacking to your first race experience, offering confidence-inspiring grip on gravel and asphalt combined with low rolling resistance and high levels of protection.
Finally, for those whose gravel bikes can accommodate tires beyond 50 mm, the Thunder Burt offers high comfort and excellent grip, with surprisingly little rolling resistance.
Conclusion
Looking back on over 50 years of company history, Schwalbe have become simply indispensable in the gravel segment. The result of this decades-long experience is a 2026 portfolio so specialised that there is an almost perfect answer for every rider profile. If you are looking for pure efficiency, the G-One RS Pro is hard to ignore, though you must be ready to tame its idiosyncratic handling. If you are looking for the ultimate all-rounder, you will find one of the strongest tires currently on the market in the G-One RX Pro.
