With the Terra Competition, Continental are going all in: aerodynamic optimisation, exceptionally low weight and minimal rolling resistance. Is that the formula for the ultimate gravel tire when outright speed is the main priority? Continental describe it as an all-round option, though, because whether you are riding gravel or tarmac, this tire is meant to excel at high speed. So is it made for UCI gravel racing? It is no surprise that the tire was first spotted undercover at the 2025 Gravel World Championships.
Continental aim to deliver that performance through a special aerodynamically optimised tread pattern: finely textured and forward-facing, with tapered grooves running across the tire, and only very minimal side knobs for extra grip. On top of that, there are two different casing options and rubber compounds: our test tire uses the Race casing for maximum efficiency and a softer ride, while the Trail casing is built to be a little more robust.
Flat Out on Gravel and Tarmac: Continental Terra Competition in the 2026 Gravel Tire Group Test
The Continental Terra Competition clearly has its sights set on the podium, but how does it actually perform? At just 494 g, it comes in almost 75 g below the test field average weight, with only the Specialized Terra TLR and the slightly narrower 42 mm Michelin Power Adventure weighing less. So the foundations for a seriously fast gravel tire are certainly there.
Unsurprisingly, rolling resistance is outstanding too: at just 11.1 watts, the Continental Terra Competition is the second-fastest tire on the test bench across the entire group test, trailing the Schwalbe G-One RS Pro by only 0.5 watts. That leaves one key question: does that speed come at the expense of grip and puncture protection?
The Terra Competition makes only minor compromises when it comes to puncture protection, because a light and fast casing will inherently struggle to match a thick, heavy tire outright. Even so, the Terra Competition still performs well here. As with all Continental tires, the focus is more on penetration resistance than pinch-flat protection, although that bias is less pronounced here than on the Terra Speed. Pinch-flat protection sits around the test average, while puncture resistance is slightly above it. All in all, that is a respectable result, especially for a tire designed to be ridden quickly on hard surfaces, where it should be exposed to less severe impacts.
That’s enough of the lab testing talk. How does the Terra Competition perform out on the trail? Grip is surprisingly good, shaped above all by the supple casing and grippy rubber compound. On hard surfaces in particular, this tire is an absolute weapon, but the Terra Competition also surprises on soft, damp and even muddy ground. Here it offers notably more grip than the minimal tread would suggest, although it still sits slightly behind the Terra Speed. Of course, it is no match for tires with more aggressive tread, but it is still a surprisingly capable all-rounder. Handling is defined by the round profile and shallow tread: super agile, always confidence-inspiring, with a smooth, rounded rolling feel that makes it genuinely fun to ride, with a far more racy character than the fast but somewhat sluggish-feeling Schwalbe G-One RS Pro. Compliance is extremely high thanks to the supple casing, and across the whole test field, only the wide Continental Dubnital MTB tire does better here.
