Lezyne Super GPS

The Lezyne Super GPS is the top-end model of the Californian manufacturer based in San Luis Obispo. What can you expect from a GPS device for a comparatively meagre € 149.95 and how does it compete with the competition from Wahoo, Garmin & Co.?

In 2015, Lezyne expanded its portfolio to include GPS computers and took their ‘Engineered Design’ very literally – the mount looks quite bulky and gives a somewhat outdated impression. The 2-inch monochrome display serves its purpose, but has the worst resolution compared to the rest of the test field.

The four buttons on the side require a lot of pressure, but do respond. Sometimes they’re assigned more than one function, and in combination with the complex menu, you will have to study the manual before being able to make use of all the functions. When switched on, the Super GPS shows that it’s possible for a GPS device to get going without taking forever to boot-up – it’s ready to go immediately after a short beep.

The device connects to Lezyne’s GPS Ally App via Bluetooth, set-up is quick and easy with a numerical code. Routes that are available as gpx files can’t be imported directly into the app on your smartphone. Instead, they have to be uploaded via Lezyne’s online platform, GPS-Root–just as inconveniently as with Garmin. The route can then be selected in the app and sent to the device. If you want to plan a route yourself, the GPS Ally App is the only app in the entire test field that offers the possibility to plan a route with several waypoints directly on your smartphone. However, the subsequent navigation with the Lezyne Super GPS is tedious: the turn-by-turn instructions for forks and roundabouts are imprecise; and the route drawn on a white background only gives a rough indication of the direction. If you deviate from the planned route, the GPS computer points this out, but doesn’t manage to re-route back to the planned route fast enough, as advertised by Lezyne. During our test, an off-route message appeared, but the route wasn’t recalculated. All settings on the Super GPS can be made both via the smartphone app and directly on the device, which, in contrast to Wahoo, allows you to remain flexible in situations without a smartphone.

The Lezyne Super GPS is a functional GPS computer at a low price for purists who mainly collect data with a GPS computer but do not necessarily need it for navigation purposes. Usability suffers somewhat under the ageing design and the proprietary, closed GPS Root system.
