Bavarian bikepacking: ORTLIEB Gravel-Pack and Frame-Pack Toptube bags on test

ORTLIEB are also jumping on the gravel train and have introduced new bags for the main triangle and a fork mounted rack. But can either the Gravel-Pack or Frame-Pack Toptube work for longer journeys and everyday commuting? We’ve had them on our bike for the last four months to find out!

ORTLIEB Gravel-Pack and Frame-Pack Toptube | 594 g and 167 g | € 119.99 and € 99.99 | Manufacturer’s website

A little late to the party, the bike bag giant has expanded its range with a bikepacking and gravel collection – as we’ve come to expect from the brand, all the new models are completely waterproof. The Gravel-Pack bags are based on ORTLIEB’s well-known Sport Roller panniers and can be mounted on a lowrider front rack. With a claimed weight of 1,160 g, together they hold up to 25 L. Even fully-loaded, they are claimed to have minimal impact on the bike’s handling. The panniers mount to the rack with ORTLIEB’s proven Quick Lock 2.1 system, which can be adapted to fit rack tubing between 8 and 16 mm in diameter with shims. For storage space in the main triangle, ORTLIEB present the Frame-Pack Toptube bag. This will fit most full-suspension or gravel bikes, as well as leaving space for a bottle. The bag weighs 170 g and with a 4 L capacity, offers enough volume to access everything you need on the go.

We mounted the Gravel-Packs on a Pizza Rack – we thoroughly recommend the combination!

ORTLIEB Gravel-Pack und Frame-Pack Toptube on test

As you’d expect from ORTLIEB, the Gravel-Pack bags are completely waterproof. We took them through heavy rain and snowstorms without even a drop of moisture making its way inside. It was just when hosing them down after a tour that it was necessary to pay attention that the zip was actually closed ;). The workmanship is high-quality and even filled to the brim, the bags feel robust. Whether brushing against thorns or branches, any scrapes while riding made no impact on the material. At 25 L, the bags offer more than enough space and really, you shouldn’t be packing more on the front end of your bike. With large loads, the Gravel-Packs do have a significant impact on handling, so we recommend you pack high-volume but lightweight equipment (such as sleeping bags or jackets) at the front and put heavier backs nearer the centre of gravity in the frame bag. Before you stuff your new bags full and set off, please make sure to check compatibility with your current rack. The spacing between the top mount and bottom hook isn’t all that large and could cause some problems. It’s important that the lower hook is helping the Gravel-Pack sit securely.

If they’re setup right and attached properly, the Gravel-Packs will stay perfectly in position throughout your ride

For all those who want to be able to carry a water bottle alongside their frame bag, ORTLIEB have developed the Frame-Pack Toptube bag. It’s well finished and stable enough that the stiff zipper can be opened while riding. Unfortunately, ORTLIEB have only seen fit to provide access from one side of the bag. Fitting the bag might get a bit tight in some cases, as only the position of the downtube’s velcro strap can be changed. In addition, smaller frame triangles might not have enough space to fit both the frame pack and a drinking bottle. ORTLIEB provide a template on their website to check the compatibility of your frame – clever! Once fitted, the bag sits securely and doesn’t move around. However, if you’re riding a skinny-tubed steel frame, despite doubling back, the long velcro straps stick out on the other side and could occasionally interfere with your legs. The velcro itself won’t mark your frame, but be sure to clean the straps of dirt. As it collects, it can eventually lead to scuffs and scratches. In any case, we’d always recommend fitting protective tape to your frame. While the Frame-Pack Toptube doesn’t fill the whole triangle, it’s big enough to stow your most important items and is easy to access mid-ride. However, we missed having compartments inside for organisation. Smaller objects such as your wallet, phone or wind jacket will inevitably become a jumbled mess. In order to keep it waterproof, the bag is also missing a port for a water bladder hose or cables. As a result, you’ll have to keep the zipper slightly open to charge your devices or power lights.

Half a kilo of pasta, 1 L of water, pesto and dessert – the Toptube bags fits more than you might think

Conclusion

Better late than never! With the Gravel-Pack and Frame-Pack Toptube, the ORTLIEB team has proven once again why its products have led the market for the last 40 years in terms of robustness and waterproofness. The pairing is a reliable companion for lots of scenarios, in any weather! If you’re on the lookout for robust bags for your ride to work or your next bikepacking adventure, then you should take a closer look at ORTLIEB products. However, you’ll have to forgo compartments or a cable port.
