The 3T Extrema Italia is without a doubt the wildest bike in this test field. With its 50 mm tires, cutting-edge components and aero-optimized concept, it’s aiming for the top spot of the podium in our 2025 gravel race bike comparison test. But can this carbon masterpiece hold its own against the latest race-focused gravel competition?

The people at 3T don’t seem to be too fond of conventional solutions. White bikes and standard tires? Too boring. And why should you tighten stem bolts from the front like everyone else? The 3T Extrema Italia does things differently– true to its name, everything about the special “Italia” edition is extreme. So extreme, in fact, that the choice of a standard SRAM groupset almost seems out of place.

But while the bike may look radical, the concept clearly works. 3T were among the pioneers of race-focused gravel bikes, and the Extrema has already claimed some impressive victories– including a win at the 2024 edition of Badlands. So, is it good enough for our GF Gravel Race World Championship?

Normal is boring – New directions for the 3T Extrema Italia

The 3T Extrema Italia has plenty to offer, but the first thing that catches your eye is the sheer size of its tires. Fitted with 50 mm Schwalbe G-One RX Pros, it has the widest, most aggressively treaded tires in the entire test field. And considering that the Extrema can handle up to 57 mm, it’s clear that this bike doesn’t like to compromise. Despite its generous tire clearance, the frame is purpose-built for gravel racing, and is therefore aerodynamically optimised.

The design is striking – an ultra-narrow yet deep head tube, a wide downtube, and a sleek rear triangle with a cutout around the rear wheel. The result? Cutting-edge aerodynamics, not just for a race gravel bike, but by any standard.

Adding to the unconventional concept is the raw carbon finish with exposed fibres. And if there was still any doubt that the 3T Extrema Italia is built for all kinds of gravel riding, the round seatpost seals the deal. By combining the aerodynamic benefits of an aero seatpost with the versatility of a round one, 3T keep all options open– including a dropper post. With this much tire clearance and flexibility, the Extrema is edging close to mountain bike territory.

In this test field, the only other bike with a round seat post is the adventure-focused Merida, meaning that it’s dropper-ready straight out of the box. But all these features come at a price– €11,999, to be exact. This makes it the third most expensive bike in the entire test field. And at 8.84 kg, it’s also the second heaviest– just 100 g lighter than the Merida Silex, which costs less than half as much.

3T Extrema Italia – Carbon as far as the eye can see

When it comes to the spec, 3T went all out. The Extrema Italia is packed with (nearly) everything a race gravel rider could dream of.

Ready for anything
Whether it’s Badlands, a UCI gravel race, or a bikepacking adventure, the 3T Extrema Italia is equipped for it all– thanks to its versatile mounting points, it’s ready to carry plenty of gear for long-distance rides.

The SRAM Red XPLR groupset is a clear favourite– without question the benchmark in this test, delivering top-tier shifting and braking performance. But things take a less conventional turn with the crankset. Instead of the usual options, 3T fitted their in-house Trono carbon crank. With its sleek look and full-carbon construction, it screams exclusivity. However, it’s not without drawbacks– despite lacking a power meter, the proprietary 3T chainring interface isn’t compatible with third party components. While 3T offer a good range of chainrings, you don’t exactly have much choice.

Carbon artistry
Raw carbon at its finest– the 3T Extrema Italia doesn’t hide its carbon construction but proudly showcases its layered and interwoven fibres.

How about a little more?
If the carbon weave on the frame isn’t enough for you, the 3T Torno crankset might do the trick. With its aero-optimised chainrings, it’s designed for maximum efficiency.

Fortunately, the wheels are less restrictive. 3T pair their in-house wheelset with 50 mm Schwalbe G-One RX Pro tires– a very good combination. At 40 mm wide and 45 mm deep, the rims provide excellent support for the oversized tires, enhancing stability and traction. Up front, the 3T More stem features a distinctive round design that looks slightly out of place, while the 3T MinMax Integrale handlebars come in a generous 42 cm width on the hoods and 50 cm in the drops. With plenty of flare, they’re designed for control– but excessively wide for a modern gravel race bike.

Lost on a gravel bike?
With 29 mm internal width and a 40 mm overall width, the burly rims of the 3T gravel wheelset wouldn’t look out of place on a mountain bike.

One of a kind
JWhile every other bike in the test would be pushed to its limits with 50 mm Schwalbe G-One RX Pro tyres, the 3T Extrema Italia still has plenty of room to spare.

The Extrema Italia is well-equipped for maximum versatility. The main frame triangle features mounts for three bottle cages, a top tube bag, mudguards, and additional cargo mounts on the fork, which make it a capable option for long bikepacking adventures. Add in the robust downtube protector, and you’re ready for whatever the trail throws at you.

The Geometry of the 3T Extrema Italia

The frame of the 3T Extrema Italia is designed with stability and comfort in mind, and therefore features a relatively relaxed geometry. The 437 mm chainstays are on the longer side, ensuring a steady, predictable ride– ideal for long days in the saddle and tackling demanding terrain. With a slack head angle ranging from 69.1° to 72°, the Extrema aims to balance composure at speed with responsive handling. Meanwhile, the stack-to-reach ratio of 1.57 ensures a relaxed riding position– perfect for big adventures and endurance-focused gravel racing.

3T Extrema Italia – Like a monster truck in a sandbox

What the geometry suggests, the ride reaffirms. While testing the bike at the Gran Fondo Gravel World Championship in the Maritime Alps around Nice and Monaco, the 3T Extrema Italia stood out for its exceptional off-road capabilities. But what really surprised us was its agility– despite the imposing monster truck look, the bike handles twisty trails better than expected. That said, it’s nowhere near as nimble as the most agile bikes in this test, with ROSE and SCOTT clearly leading the pack in that regard.

Ride with me, Bro!

When it comes to stability, though, the Extrema is unparalleled. With its wide handlebars and oversized tires, it absorbs almost everything in its path. Picking a line? Just point it straight and roll over whatever comes your way.

This translates into a planted, confidence-inspiring ride feeling, which can be slightly restrained. The bike certainly gives off a monster truck vibe – ready to tackle anything– but if you prefer a more active riding style, the muted handling might feel like a limitation rather than a benefit.

Acceleration is also on the sluggish side, which is largely due to the bike’s weight. The hefty wheels and tires take some effort to get up to speed, making it feel less eager off the line. On the flip side, the tires deliver outstanding comfort, which is welcome given that the frame itself doesn’t offer much compliance. Still, the 3T Extrema Italia is a blast to ride. Thanks to its wide tires and rock-solid stability, it’s capable of handling just about anything, boosting confidence and encouraging you to explore new routes.

Overall, it’s a strong all-rounder,and built more for fast and rugged terrain than for ultra-precise handling. But one thing’s for sure: on the descents, this bike is a guaranteed winner.

Tuning tip: A chainstay protector for even better off-road performance– no worries about scratches.

What kind of race is the 3T Extrema Italia built for?

The 3T Extrema Italia is built to handle anything. With its massive tire clearance and exceptional traction, it’s the undisputed monster truck in this test. On the trail, that translates to confidence-inspiring stability and a feeling of unstoppable capability– which makes it the perfect choice for events like Badlands or similar ultra-distance races. But it’s not just built for the long haul. Thanks to the relentless aero optimisation, the Extrema is also a serious contender on shorter courses. However, its real strength lies in its extreme versatility. With the widest, grippiest tires in the test, it encourages you to venture off the beaten track and tackle even the most technical trails.
