They always say that bad news travels fast, and last Saturday morning was a case in point. When the cycling world loses someone in the way it did at the weekend with Michele Scarponi, it’s news that hits with a nauseating thump. Near misses is something every cyclist has experienced at some point on the road, it’s a constant war that’s exhausting. Credit to Astana for racing on what must have been an incredibly emotional day. Take a few moments of silence and let Russ Ellis’ photos of La Doyenne help us remember Michele Scarponi.

Valverde took his second win of the week and has said that he will donate his winnings from this week to Scarponi’s family.
